It typically occurs as a gray-white to pale-brown flaky crystalline solid. The compound is sparingly soluble in cold water and is capable of sublimation upon heating. Owing to the reactivity of its two amino groups, 3,4-diaminotoluene is widely employed as a valuable intermediate in the manufacture of dyes and in various organic synthesis processes.
