Products Description of 2'-Fucosyllactose CAS#41263-94-9

2’-Fucosyllactose (2’-FL) is a naturally occurring human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) and one of the most abundant HMOs found in human breast milk. Introduced by BASF under its Newtrition® brand for human nutrition applications in early 2019, 2’-FL has attracted considerable attention as a functional ingredient for infant and early-life nutrition. HMOs are a distinctive class of complex carbohydrates naturally present in breast milk and constitute the third-largest solid component after lactose and fat.

2’-FL is manufactured through microbial fermentation using genetically modified strains of Escherichia coli. It can be incorporated into a variety of nutritional formulations, including infant formulas for different developmental stages, specialized formulas for specific dietary requirements, and nutritional supplements intended for toddlers.

Studies have shown that 2’-FL may help promote a balanced intestinal microbiota and support normal immune system development. It has also been investigated for its potential role in supporting a healthy immune response and reducing the likelihood of allergic conditions. In addition, 2’-FL may contribute to normal neurological and cognitive development, making it a valuable functional ingredient in early-life nutrition. Its potential benefits for gastrointestinal health, including support for mucosal homeostasis and the regulation of intestinal inflammatory responses, have further increased interest in its use in digestive health applications.2'-Fucosyllactose

Product Application of 2'-Fucosyllactose CAS#41263-94-9

Breast milk is widely recognized as the preferred source of nutrition during early infancy. Naturally occurring 2’-Fucosyllactose (2’-FL) is present in the breast milk of most women. However, infants are unable to independently produce fucosylated human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) during this early stage of development.

As one of the predominant HMOs in human milk, 2’-FL is naturally abundant in breast milk but is not found in bovine milk. The availability of commercially manufactured 2’-FL therefore provides an opportunity to incorporate this naturally occurring oligosaccharide into infant nutrition products and other specialized nutritional formulations.

2’-FL functions as a prebiotic by selectively supporting beneficial microorganisms in the intestinal tract. These bacteria can metabolize 2’-FL into short-chain fatty acids, which may serve as an energy source for intestinal epithelial cells and contribute to normal fluid and electrolyte absorption. As a result, conventional infant formulas may not provide certain HMOs that are naturally present in human milk.

While breastfed infants are naturally exposed to 2’-FL through human milk, commercially produced 2’-FL offers an alternative source for nutritional applications. When manufactured appropriately, 2’-FL has the same molecular structure as the 2’-FL naturally present in human breast milk, making it a valuable ingredient for infant and early-life nutrition products.
