Products Description of Copper (II) Nitrate Hydrate CAS#10031-43-3
Copper(II) nitrate trihydrate is a dark blue crystalline compound that readily absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. It is highly soluble in water and ethanol, and its aqueous solutions vary in color depending on concentration, ranging from light blue in dilute solutions to green in more concentrated solutions. The compound has a molecular weight of 241.60, a melting point of approximately 114.5°C, and a density of 2.32 g/cm³. It is readily deliquescent and can dissolve in its own water of crystallization upon melting.
Copper nitrate exists in several hydrated forms, with copper(II) nitrate hexahydrate, Cu(NO₃)₂·6H₂O, and copper(II) nitrate trihydrate, Cu(NO₃)₂·3H₂O, being the commonly encountered forms. Copper nitrate hexahydrate occurs as blue crystals with a relative density of approximately 2.074. At around 26.4°C, it loses three molecules of crystallization water and converts to the trihydrate form. Further heating promotes decomposition and the formation of basic copper salts.
Upon heating, copper(II) nitrate trihydrate undergoes progressive thermal decomposition. At elevated temperatures, it begins to lose nitric acid and form basic copper nitrate, while further heating ultimately produces copper oxide and nitrogen-containing gaseous products. The compound may also undergo decomposition or reaction in the presence of hydrochloric acid. Concentrated nitric acid can be used to facilitate recrystallization.
As a strong oxidizing compound, copper nitrate requires appropriate handling and storage. Contact with carbon, sulfur, or other readily combustible materials may result in vigorous reactions and presents a potential fire or explosion hazard. It is widely utilized in copper electroplating, pesticide manufacturing, enamel production, dye preparation, and other chemical processing applications. Industrial preparation may involve the reaction of copper metal or copper oxide with dilute nitric acid.
