Products Description of Neodymium Nitrate Hexahydrate CAS#16454-60-7

Neodymium nitrate hexahydrate has the molecular formula Nd(NO₃)₃·6H₂O and a molecular weight of 438.35 g/mol. It exists in two crystalline forms, α and β, with a phase transition occurring at approximately 22°C. The compound is highly soluble in water and ethanol. Under vacuum dehydration, it can be converted into anhydrous neodymium nitrate, while prolonged or intense heating results in thermal decomposition. Neodymium nitrate can also readily interact with other metal nitrates to form a variety of complex hydrated salts, including 3Mg(NO₃)₂·2Nd(NO₃)₃·24H₂O, 3Mn(NO₃)₂·2Nd(NO₃)₃·24H₂O, and 3Ni(NO₃)₂·2Nd(NO₃)₃·24H₂O.

Neodymium nitrate solution is an acidic aqueous solution typically characterized by a purple-red color. Because of its relatively strong acidity, it can react vigorously with carbonate-containing materials and may accelerate the corrosion of certain refractory materials. For this reason, it is generally not added directly to glass batch materials. Instead, the solution is commonly premixed with sodium carbonate before incorporation into the batch.

As a glass-coloring material, neodymium nitrate solution can be incorporated into glass production without requiring special melting conditions. As the dosage increases, the resulting glass may exhibit colors ranging from light blue to blue-violet under fluorescent illumination. Under sunlight, the glass can display a distinctive bluish-purple to reddish hue, commonly described as rose red. A small addition of selenium may further intensify the red coloration, particularly under low-light conditions, helping maintain the characteristic purple-red appearance of neodymium-colored glass.

The use of neodymium nitrate solution can also help reduce the required amount of Nd₂O₃, potentially lowering raw material costs. When properly premixed with soda ash, it represents a technically practical and potentially cost-effective raw material for producing colored glass.NEODYMIUM NITRATE HEXAHYDRATE
