Applications of Acetylacetone CAS#123-54-6

Acetylacetone is widely recognized as a versatile intermediate for organic synthesis. It readily reacts with guanidine to form amino-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine, making it a useful starting material in the manufacture of pharmaceutical products.

Beyond pharmaceutical applications, acetylacetone is utilized in a variety of industrial fields. It serves as a solvent for cellulose acetate, an additive in gasoline and lubricating oils, and a drying agent for paints and varnishes. It is also employed as a fungicide and insecticide. In petroleum processing, acetylacetone can act as a catalyst or reaction promoter in petroleum cracking, hydrogenation, and carbonylation processes, as well as an oxidation promoter

Additionally, acetylacetone can be used to remove metal oxides from porous materials and in the treatment of polypropylene catalysts. In Europe and the United States, more than half of the total acetylacetone consumption is reported to be associated with applications including antidiarrheal pharmaceuticals and livestock feed additives.
